Weta Workshop

Picture
Weta Workshop came on board with Lippy Pictures early in the Tangiwai pre-production process. The invaluable miniatures experience of the Weta crew complemented the production's existing Art Department, and the partnership resulted in a finely-detailed mini version of the original NZR Ka Class steam loco & carriage accompaniment from 1953.

Beyond the train itself, the track, river, lahar and surrounds had to be 'miniaturised' as well, deep in the heart of the rugged Makara Hills west of Wellington. The weeks before the two-night shoot involved intense challenges: a full set construction and dress; train, camera and impact tests; and not least, coordinating shipments of industrial pumps from around New Zealand to create the raging river flow.

A unique propulsion system was designed for the train, with a classic 'Number 8 wire' sensibility: a lengthy steel cable was run along the track, hooked to the loco and powered by a stationary, jacked-up Ford Falcon with rear tyres removed. Want the train to go backwards? Just shift into reverse!
